GRAMMARQ: Why is the hiragana HA sometimes read as WA?わたしは as in "わたしはひろこです" has two "wa" sounds. The first "wa" sound is written as hiragana わ, but the second "wa" is written as hiragana.Language Tipは is basically read as "ha" but only when it's used as a particle, it's read as "wa."The particle 'wa' is spelled as 'ha/は' in hiragana.Other than the particle 'wa', the sound of 'wa' is spelled as 'wa/わ' in hiragana. As for “kon’nichi wa” and “konban wa”, these “wa” was originally particles. The original phrases were probably something like:Kon’nichi wa dou desu ka? = How is today?Kon’ban wa dou desu ka? = How is tonight? And that “dou desu ka?” part was dropped and became “kon’nichi wa” and “konban wa”. So they’re still spelled as こんにちは and こんばんは today.Sample Sentences:わたしはかおりです。Watashi wa Kaori desu.こんにちは。Kon'nichi wa.こんばんは。Konban wa.
